Duplicating Recipes and Creating Recipe Templates

Duplicating recipes is useful when you want to create variations, reuse layouts, or speed up recipe creation without starting from scratch. Recipe Card Blocks offers multiple ways to duplicate recipes, depending on your workflow and how your recipes are created.

Duplicate a Recipe Using the Clone Option (Recommended)

The Clone option lets you duplicate an entire recipe directly from the Recipes list. This method preserves all recipe data and opens the duplicate in the editor immediately, making it ideal for creating recipe variations.

1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Recipe Cards โ†’ Recipes.

2. Hover over the recipe you want to duplicate.

3. Click Clone. The cloned recipe will open automatically in the editor.

4. Make the changes you need. The original recipe will remain unchanged.

5. Click Publish to publish the duplicated recipe.

Alternative Methods to Duplicate Recipes

If you prefer other workflows, you can also duplicate recipes using one of these methods:

  • Copy and paste the Recipe Card block
  • Use a duplicate post plugin
  • Use patterns from the block editor

Duplicate a Recipe by Copying and Pasting the Recipe Block

This method is useful when your recipe is added as a block inside a post or page, and you want to reuse it in another location. It allows quick duplication directly from the block editor.

Steps:

1. Open the post or page containing the recipe.

2. Select the Recipe Card block.

3. Click the More options (โ‹ฎ) menu in the block toolbar.

4. Choose Copy.

    5. Open the post or page where you want to duplicate the recipe.

    6. Paste the block into the editor and edit the recipe content as needed.

    7. Click Update or Publish.

Duplicate a Recipe Using a Duplicate Post Plugin

Using a duplicate post plugin lets you clone entire recipe posts, including layout and metadata. This method is helpful if your recipes are managed as posts and you want to duplicate everything at once.

      Steps:

      1. Install and activate a post duplication plugin such as Yoast Duplicate Post.

      2. Enable the Recipes posts type in the Permissions tab of the plugin settings.

      3. Go to Recipe Cards โ†’ Recipes or Posts. This method allows you to duplicate blog posts, not just recipes. Choose the method that fits you best.

      4. Hover over the recipe or post you want to duplicate.

      5. Click the pluginโ€™s duplication option: Clone or Duplicate.

      6. Open the duplicated recipe and make your changes.

      7. Click Publish or Update.

        Duplicate a Recipe Using Patterns

Patterns allow you to reuse recipe blocks across multiple posts. This method is best suited for layouts or content that should be reused intentionally. When using patterns for duplication, itโ€™s important to understand how synced and unsynced patterns work.

Important: Whether a pattern is synced or unsynced is decided when the pattern is created. This cannot be changed later.

Steps to Duplicate a Recipe Using an Unsynced Pattern

        1. Open a post or page that contains the recipe you want to reuse.

        2. Select the Recipe Card block.

        3. Click the More options (โ‹ฎ) menu in the block toolbar.

        4. Choose Create pattern.

        5. In the pattern creation dialog, disable the โ€œSyncโ€ option.

        6. Save the pattern.

        7. Open the post or page where you want to duplicate the recipe.

        8. Insert the newly created pattern from the Patterns tab in the block inserter.

        9. Edit the recipe content as needed. Each insertion is independent and will not affect other posts.

          Notes

          • Patterns created with Sync enabled behave like reusable blocks and stay linked across all insertions.
          • There is no built-in way to convert a synced pattern into regular blocks later.
          • If you accidentally create a synced pattern, you must recreate it with Sync disabled to use it independently.

          Recommendation

Patterns are useful when you intentionally want shared content. For creating independent copies of recipes or recipe variations, the built-in Clone option is the recommended and most reliable method.
