Getting started

Configuring Global Recipe Card Settings

The Recipe Card Blocks Settings page allows you to control the default behavior and appearance of your recipes. These global settings define how new recipes are created and how certain features behave across your site.

Some settings act as global defaults, while others can be overridden per recipe from the Recipe Card block settings. Understanding how these two levels interact is essential when managing multiple recipes.

Where To Find Global Recipe Card Settings

Global settings are available in the WordPress dashboard under Recipe Cards โ†’ Settings.

The settings page is organized into multiple tabs that group related options, such as general behavior, display options, and miscellaneous features.

Feature-specific settings are documented separately in their respective documentation pages.

Understanding Global vs Per-Recipe Settings

Recipe Card Blocks uses a two-level configuration system:

  • Global settings define default values for new recipes.
  • Per-recipe settings allow you to override those defaults for individual recipes.

When a setting is changed inside a specific recipe, that recipe becomes independent from the global setting for that option.

How Setting Overrides Work

Global settings apply in the following cases:

  • When creating new recipes
  • When a recipe has not been customized for a specific option

Per-recipe settings take precedence when:

  • A value is changed in the Recipe Card block settings
  • A section is enabled or disabled manually inside a recipe
  • A visual option (such as style or color) is customized per recipe

Once overridden, future changes made in the Settings page may not affect that recipe for the overridden option.

For example:

  • If you change the primary color of a recipe inside the Recipe Card block, the global primary color setting will no longer apply to that recipe.
  • If you disable a specific detail (such as displaying calories) inside a recipe, enabling it again globally will not affect that recipe.

This behavior is expected and ensures full control at the recipe level.

Best Practices For Managing Recipes At Scale

To keep your recipes consistent and easier to manage:

  • Use global settings to define your default layout and behavior.
  • Avoid changing per-recipe settings unless a recipe requires special customization.
  • Make most configuration changes from the Settings page, not inside individual recipes.
  • Expect many global changes to apply mainly to new recipes.
  • Manually review older recipes if you want to apply new settings everywhere.

When Global Changes Do Not Apply Automatically

Some global settings are applied only when a recipe is created or when a specific option has not been overridden.

If you update global settings and do not see changes in older recipes, you may need to:

  • open the recipe,
  • review its Recipe Card settings,
  • and save it again if necessary.
